Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Salary: £60k – £70k + benefits

Hours: Monday to Friday, standard office hours

Location: Chesterfield

Our client is an ambitious, fast-growing design consultancy with a strong track record in electrical design, and they are now expanding into mechanical building services. They are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to help build that new capability from the ground up.

This is far more than a traditional senior engineering role. You will have genuine influence over how a new discipline takes shape, from the systems and standards used through to project delivery, client relationships and, ultimately, the growth of the mechanical team. Working alongside an established electrical design team, you will help develop a fully integrated MEP offering, with the autonomy to bring your own ideas and experience to the table.

• Leading the mechanical design of building services projects from concept through to detailed design
• Producing and reviewing mechanical calculations, specifications, drawings and technical documentation
• Designing HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, public health and associated mechanical building services systems
• Working collaboratively with electrical engineers and other disciplines to deliver coordinated MEP solutions
• Liaising directly with clients, contractors, architects and other project stakeholders
• Providing technical leadership and mentoring less experienced engineers as the mechanical team develops
• Supporting project proposals, fee preparation and technical submissions
• Helping establish mechanical design standards, processes and best practice within the business
• Identifying opportunities to grow the mechanical services offering and contribute to the wider development of the consultancy
• Taking a proactive role in developing the client base and reputation within mechanical building services

Our client is looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer who combines strong technical capability with a commercial and entrepreneurial mindset.

Essential:

• Over 5 years’ experience in the mechanical building services design industry
• Strong user within CAD software and Revit
• Able to bring your own works book where possible
• Able to work autonomously
• Technical minded
• Degree in mechanical engineering is advantageous along with Building Information Modeling (BIM)
• Problem-Solving & Creativity: Finding functional, innovative workarounds when physical or cost constraints arise.
• Communication: Explaining complex technical concepts to non-engineers, suppliers, or cross-functional teams.
• Data & Documentation: Competency in tools like Microsoft Excel for bills of materials (BOMs), stress tables, and project tracking.
